WME July 13, 2009

happybaby-blog

I got home today thinking that things were pretty much in order….

Sped home, picked up V, dashed to Publix and got home at a reasonable time. 6 pm. Not too shabby!

Dinner preparations began. First some peas….

I heated them up, cooled them off a little, walked over to him and slowly spilled them onto his highchair top. He giggled. I guess the sight of all those peas rolling around was quite funny.

Peas are his new favorite vegetable to eat whole. He happily picks them off his tray and stuffs them into his little mouth. During this stuff-in time, I add some cubed Edam cheese while I heat up a veggie pattie in the microwave.

My new favorite foods for him are from *surprise* WholeFoods! I know thats a huge shocker… But they do have the best gluten/wheat free selection I have found in town, and also have an interesting selection of gluten-free toddler food.

My current favorite? HappyBaby‘s HappyBites. The veggie-tots are what are currently swinging around our kitchen…

I cooled the veggie-tot down on the counter, but pick up and hand delivered it to V’s table, to his apparent delight.

One piece in. No problem. And chewed to evident delight.

Number 2 hit that little mouth and the screams that issued after could seriously have woken the dead. I spun around, only to see V clawing at his little mouth.

Oh. My. God.

I quickly figured out that it was just too hot for that tender little palate. I swear I temperature tested it before hand…. bad mummy. I felt so horrible. That little face was so red and those little eyes were clenched shut. I did an ‘extraction’…. which means that I scooped that little mess right out of his mouth. Oh man. There was a hidden chunk of potato that was hotter than everything else. Oh that poor little mouth…

But problem solved… he has such a good temperament that he quickly moved past it and went on to stuff something else in there. Oh great. Same thing. Veggie tots. Hot.

Scream. Wail. Shriek. Claw at face. Turn red. Awesome.

By this time I was almost crying myself…. more mad at myself than anything. How could I have missed that piece that was slightly hotter than everything else? So much for my temperature testing skills…..

And then…..*sigh* it happened again.

Clearly I can’t tell temperature at all. Seriously!

This time it was so hot that those little chubby fists shook with frustration while those finger tried to claw everything out of that mouth.

Again, how did I miss this. Or was it just hot enough that, piled on top of the other hot things it pushed everything over the limit.

I felt awful. AWFUL.

Bad mummy. I completely checked everything temperature-wise…. perhaps I just…. oh… I don’t know…. I still feel awful. I gave him some ice-cream to cool that little mouth of his down. We brushed his teeth and off he went to bed.

Worst Mummy Ever. Total WME event. Embarrassingly enough, on top of all of this I felt the need to share this with random Internet-slash-family.

Clearly I am just looking for punishment…

Coherency July 10, 2009

conversation-blog

I might be cool.

Naw…… we all know I’m not. These days I can barely talk about anything besides V with any coherency. It feels like I can’t even have a proper conversation with anyone without throwing in numerous details about darling child. AND, what is really awful, is that I expect you to be just as interested as if I were discussing world events. Or Michael Jackson. Or politics (as if I even can).

But, hit me up about making your own baby-food, breastfeeding, diaper brands, teething and what to feed a toddler (or almost toddler) and I can talk your ear off.

This might mean that I have become uninteresting.

So while I dwell on my lack of conversational skills these days….*sigh*…. I try to focus on what I could be talking about.

MJ’s funeral…. didn’t watch…. was appalled at family parade of small children and weeping in front of microphone (awful!!), which I saw on CNN and news flashes the next day.

That lady who left her kids in the car while she waited for her take-out pizza. I noticed as I got into my car before her, and saw her wee little one looking at me from the backseat. What is with that! She glanced at me as she got in with a carefully controlled look on her face. She knew what she did.

And I will be judging her forever. Isn’t that nice of me? Seriously, just bring your kid in with you…. for reals…

Just watched ‘Gran Torino’ and man, it was one hell of a movie. Clint Eastwood is an amazing director. Usually, I leave the room during most movies, or talk over the whole thing. I refrained *cough cough* partially from talking through it.

Teething is my enemy. V is a teething master, and by master I really mean I wish he would stop. Or the teeth would stop. But since there are many empty spaces left in that little mouth of his, I imagine that there will beĀ  a lot of interesting nights to come.

I found a grape seed firmly lodged in his front teeth this evening. And it was a full-on war to wriggle it out. Followed by a huge tantrum. Which makes me think that he might be a little spoiled…. just a bit…

I have reconnected with some interesting people over the last few years. Mostly through facebook. Which I both curse for it’s addiction and embrace for its full-on ridiculousness… And then embrace again for the people that I reconnected with…

I sometimes fool myself into thinking that I take good nature photos. And sometimes I do. I would like a macrolense so I could experiment with some tighter construction, hopefully ending with some clearer shots.

I really need a pedicure.

See? It is all so self-focused… and mostly about babies and celebrity gossip. Oh, and me. *sigh*

I think I need some practice on having conversations.

With actual people. And not with the dog, V or Elmo…

Not sold yet July 9, 2009

house-blog

I just ate a BT sandwich. It would have been a BTL, except someone (M) ate all of the lettuce. What’s up with that!!

Since when doe he eat vegetables? Unprompted?

Regardless, after all of that house hunting this evening, it might as well have been a medium-rare piece of tenderloin covered in peppercorn, with a side of blue crab. With, oh, some tuna tartar. And a gorgeous glass of Merlot…

House hunting is exhausting, as I have now discovered. I feel like we are this sort of tornado, descending on all of these neighbourhoods. We are kind of all over the place…We like it….5 minutes later, we don’t like it. Then we like it again.

It’s totally in. And then it’s totally out (neighbourhoods, I mean). AND then things join the picture that we were never expecting.

And by that, I mean Lake Nona

And the real funny thing about this post is that I haven’t even talked to M since I got back from hunting with his parents. M’s mother is so awesome, she knows how to ask all of the right questions. And is super picky, and very verbal about it too. Which I appreciate it. I love people with very blunt opinions. It’s refreshing. I can’t stand beating-around-the-bush.

We looked at a few houses in the neighbourhood, and then decided to ‘what the hell’ take a look at some town houses.

Apparently I have preconceived notions about them. Or at least I did. After seeing this one, I no longer do. In fact, I want it. Who wouldn’t?

Porch.

Brick patio.

4 bedrooms.

It looks like Celebration, FLA…. which, for those who aren’t in the know, is beautiful and so out of our reach its not even funny…

*sigh*

Picky July 4, 2009

You know when you finally decide to take that big step in a direction that means ‘responsibility’? It’s kind of like teetering on the edge of a cliff forever…… finally someone comes up behind you and gives you a big ol’ push over the edge. There you are….. totally free-falling, no idea what to do, with a how-to manual clutched in your hand.

“Cliff-diving for Dummies”.

Really, it’s “House-Buying for Dummies”.

I think the tenants that moved in above us finally pushed me over the edge. M, apparently, hasn’t noticed them at all. All I hear is ‘thump thump thump’. And then there are our new neighbours across the courtyard, who bbq right in front of our living-room window. Awesome. I might as well just invite myself.

I guess M and I kind of keep to ourselves. We are just private kind of people that are not on first name basis with all of our apartment neighbours. We also do not party with them. Or drink with them randomly, or really hang out with any of them at all. You wouldn’t want to either.

Now ‘house’ neighbours are a different kind of story. If you are buying, you will be friendly with your neighbours. The end.

So as we blunder, slowly, through this whole initial process it’s like my brain just wants to shut down.

I look at homes online. I email our realtor things I think we’d like. She emails me back. I talk to M about when we want to look at them….. and thats when things seem to slow down for us.

We want to. But…..we also want to do everything else but physically look at them. We also are ultra picky. And have also put a time-limit on this whole thing. We are determined to take advantage of that tax credit. And also don’t want to renew our lease, which is up in October. And also we seem to be quite picky.

We don’t mind a little bit rundown. But not too rundown. We don’t mind a foreclosure, but would prefer one that comes with a pool, a pool that is sparkling clean. A 3/2 is at the bottom of the list, but a 4/2 would be better. And all of this needs to fall into a rather srict budget, and ever stricter neighbourhood that we have outlined.

And this is all tentative. Sometimes I think to myself “What the hell are we doing?!?!”

And then I think “Oh,right. We hate renting and want a house. And are firmly in our 30’s. And have a baby. And this is the next logical step.”

And so, yet again, we are picky. And possibly (a) pain(s) in the ass (es).

*sigh* This is exhausting to even type about….

Teeny tiny

gods-blog

Well, already I have failed miserabley at my attempt to post every day.

I tried so hard last night, but ended up in a round-robin of phone calls with those crazy Beltgens girls.

T and I enjoy a regular “Friday night wine date” on the phone. Since she’s in Edmonton and I am in Orlando, it is rather hard to get together in person to chat and sip adult beverages. After about 30 minutes on the phone it does tend to get rather ridiculous. It’s always been like that though, ever since we were kids… and alcohol was not involved then for sure.

Add a glass of wine (or two), and an hour and a half later your sides and abs are killing you from all of the laughing.

My cousin-love date with C was then finalized to both of our excitement.

And then it was 10:30. And I wondered why I was still up? Since M has been on summer vacation, I find myself going to bet later and later. It is rare that we get that much time alone anymore and even if it is just sitting quitely sitting side-by-side… it is awesome.

He loves peas, and so do I. We also like talking…. and not talking…. and sitting. Both of us like sitting too. And walking. That’s a big hit in our household.

With this teeny tiny post I hope that I appease the blog-gods and will be forgiven for my utter lapse of posting yesterday. And then I’ll post later. I swear! And it will be more exciting! And clever, possibly even witty?!

Potato (PoTAto) June 30, 2009

potato-blog

Potato. Sometimes I hate you.

I really love you. Mashed. Fried. Hashed. Deep-fried. Really however you are served. Boiled too.

This evening I arrived home from work to find dinner preparations in full swing. Things were being boiled and stirred in the kitchen. Pans were being rattled around. The tap was being turned on and off. Repeatedly. And V was wailing away in his high-chair, clutching his bottle, naked (except for a diaper) with his damp hair sticking up…

Apparently he had just had a bath. And M thought it would be a good idea to stick him in his high-chair diaper-clad.

And then make him mashed potatoes.

Now I know more women than men are reading this. Well, I am pretty sure anyways….. But lets follow the logic on this one….. fresh from the tub, squeaky-clean, that lovely baby smooth skin…

I am sure that the first thing that you are thinking about is how feeding your child mashed potatoes without a bib is maybe the best idea ever!

I returned from my run (luckily) just post-potato fest.

V. Was. Covered.

Hair. Toes. Diaper. High chair. Diaper. Nose (up). Face. Ears. etc etc.

I carried him to the bathroom at arms length, and stripped him down on the bath mat. A trail of mashed potato followed us, quickly eaten by Chewie. A little got rubbed into the bathmat I bought from Ikea a few weeks ago. Potato plus lime green equals poor colour management. Anyways, happily the tub was still full.

Oh wait. I mean unhappily it was still full of dirty, brown cold water. Awesome. So a naked V happily played with cold mashed potatoes that were flaking off his body on our bathroom floor, while Mummy refilled the tub. I might have cursed M just a little. I might have ended up with potato in my hair. And somehow in my armpit…. not sure how it got there, but I am not surprised. Things seem to turn up unexpectedly these days. Zucchini in diaper, potato in armpit. That’s how it goes….

We are still running in full-on teething mode. 4 coming in. Drool. Tantrums ahoy! And the most awesome crying, flailing back-bends you have ever seen in your life!!

Good times over here in Orlando… I think it might take a while until I love potato again…
